We call on all our offshore members and offshore workers generally to sign the linked e-petition regarding the social dumping which is happening now in the shipping sector. It is vital that we support our colleagues with this campaign, as should they fail to halt this exploitation then it could be coming to a place near you very soon.
We are already seeing diving vessels, stand-by vessels and supply vessels being manned by increasing numbers of foreign nationals on disgraceful rates of pay. If our industry, the offshore oil and gas sector, gets the chance to mirror the shipping business you can be sure they will! We are already seeing some mobile drilling units being manned by exploited labour and this will inevitably increase unless there is some kind of fight back. In the future several decades of lucrative decommissioning work could be lost to British workers as the potential to bring in barges already manned with cheap exploited labour will be a very real possibility.
